Οι περισσότεροι ασθενείς που μολύνονται από τον ιό εκδηλώνουν προβλήματα στο αναπνευστικό, πυρετό, βήχα και δύσπνοια. Ο ιός είναι εξαιρετικά επικίνδυνος καθώς στο 50% των περιπτώσεων οι ασθενείς χάνουν τη ζωή τους.
Στον επιστημονικό χώρο, ο CoV είναι γνωστός και ως κορωναϊός, δεδομένου ότι η ονομασία του ιού, coronavirus, υποδηλώνει την χαρακτηριστική «κορώνα» που φαίνεται στο ηλεκτρονικό μικροσκόπιο.
Σύμφωνα με το αμερικανικό Κέντρο Ελέγχου και Πρόληψης Νοσημάτων (CDC), ο MERS-CoV μεταδίδεται με την επαφή από άτομο σε άτομο. Η προέλευση του ιού παραμένει άγνωστη, όμως είναι πιθανό να μεταδόθηκε αρχικά από κάποιο ζώο.
Επί του παρόντος, δεν υπάρχει κάποιο διαθέσιμο εμβόλιο που να προστατεύει από τον ιό.
