Το πρόγραμμα επεξεργασίας λογιστικών φύλλων της Microsoft, Excel, δεν φαίνεται να ικανοποιεί πολλούς επιστήμονες, αφού όπως υποστηρίζουν αποτελεί την αιτία για σοβαρά λάθη που έχουν γίνει σε επιστημονικές εργασίες πάνω στη γονιδιωματική.

Επιστήμονες δημοσιοποίησαν το θέμα με σκοπό να κάνουν γνωστό το σφάλμα που υπάρχει στο πρόγραμμα, το οποίο μετατρέπει αυτόματα τα ονόματα ορισμένων γονιδίων σε ημερομηνίες. Όπως αναφέρει σε δημοσίευμά του το βρετανικό ειδησεογραφικό δίκτυο BBC, σύμβολα γονιδίων όπως το SET2 (Septin 2) μετατρέπονται αυτόματα σε «September 2». Ωστόσο, η Microsoft, η οποία διέθεσε την πρώτη έκδοση του Excel το 1985, αναφέρει σε ανακοίνωσή της ότι το σφάλμα στην μετονομασία των γονιδίων μπορεί να διορθωθεί εάν οι χρήστες κάνουν ορισμένες αλλαγές στις ρυθμίσεις της εφαρμογής.

«Το Excel έχει τη δυνατότητα να εμφανίζει τα δεδομένα και τα κείμενα με πολλούς διαφορετικούς τρόπους. Οι προεπιλεγμένες ρυθμίσεις είναι σχεδιασμένες ώστε να λειτουργούν σε καθημερινά σενάρια», δήλωσε εκπρόσωπος της εταιρείας στο BBC.

Πάντως, όπως αναφέρει το βρετανικό δίκτυο, αυτό το πρόβλημα δεν εκδηλώνεται στο ανάλογο πρόγραμμα της Google, το Google Sheets.
